What are winter tyres?

Winter tyres are specifically designed to increase traction and reduce braking distance during temperatures of under 7c. They use a different compound which is rich in silica as well as different tread pattern to offer more grip in cold, icy and wet conditions.

What is the difference between winter and summer tyres?

Standard tyres that are more commonly fit in the UK are referred to as Summer tyres. During the colder weather they become harder, less elastic , which means the sipes don’t dig in resulting in a loss of grip and stopping distance. This worsens particularly if the tyres are worn with significant reductions in braking particularly at speed if on a motorway.

Do winter tyres wear out quickly?

This is one misconception regarding winter tyres that they wear out quickly. Based on our climate here in the UK tests have shown that they actually last as long as if not longer in some applications than summer tyres.

Why are winter tyres so hard to find?

The majority of tyre manufacturers produce winter tyres for only a couple of months a year, they are still regarded as a very small percentage of annual sales and the countries who make it compulsory to change to winter tyres are provided with the tyres first before the UK.  Production will always be limited and the colder winters increase the demand for the product.

When should I order?

As soon as the bad weather hits and people are struggling to get to work etc, this is when retailers see the surge in demand, which sees prices rocket and leaves people disappointed. We strongly advise placing your order for winter or all season tyres as soon as possible, preferably August/September or sooner. This allows the stock arriving in the Autumn  to be allocated to you, so you have peace of mind,  it also helps us forecast our ordering.

Should I change all four tyres?

We recommend changing all four tyres as fitting just a pair on an axle can cause the vehicle to skid or lose control due to the extra grip the winter tyres offer compared to summer tyres.

When should I change my winter tyres?

In deciding when to fit winter tyres, it is important not only to consider the chances of bad weather conditions, but also to observe when the average temperature falls below 7 degrees Celsius. In north-western Europe, this means that the right time to fit winter tyres is at the end of September, and its best to keep them until April. An easy rule to remember is that you should be using winter tyres when there is an ‘r’ in the name of the month.

How should I store my summer tyres when not in use?

We advise storing your summer tyres in a stack so your tyres are is lying flat on the ground on the sidewall not the tread. You can stack all four on top of each over.

We strongly suggest marking  up the tyres as to the position they came off the vehicle, particularly if it's a 4 wheel drive as this is often stipulated by the manufacturer.

A cool dark place such as a garage is ideal for storing your tyres, this must be away from chemicals or petroleum products. If space is an issue, why not ask your fitter if they offer any storage facilities? Some tyre dealers are beginning to offer this service as this is already a common practise in other  European countries.

Do I use a different pressure with winter tyres?

It is not necessary to inflate winter tyres any differently than you would summer tyres. With any tyre it is important to check the pressure regularly, fortnightly is good practise, monthly at the least. Do so while the tyres are cold too.

Will my fuel consumption increase when driving on winter tyres?

On the contrary, due to their rubber consumption, winter tyres have a slightly lower rolling resistance than summer tyres.
